Were there really pirates in the Caribbean?

Can you answer BT's question about Caribbean Vacations?:

I live in the Caribbean and nothing too crazy happened here with pirates. I know there was this famous one called Pirate Cofresi in the island Puerto Rico where I live, and I think there was two more. But really, their adventures were so "great" that I don't even remember what they really did. In History class I learn little information about them, I know they used to come over here and they had fights and steal from other people and then sail away, but nothing more.

Were there really Pirates in the Caribbean like in the movie and, to which islands they use to go? Do you know the name of real famous pirates?

I doubt it; they wanted this ride/movie to be an exciting as possible, without being believable.

There were smugglers who would often attack government ships and steal whatever they had on board. A lot of times, sailors were taken from the government ships and forced to work on the smugglers' ships. This seems pretty close to pirate-dom.

Yes there where pirates but not exactly like the movie. Because Spain monopolized the commerce with the Spanish colonies the dutch and English trader's would go to nearby islands like Aruba, Curazao, Trinidad and Tobago and illegally trade with the colonies.

The great or classic era of piracy in the Caribbean extends from around 1560 up until the end of the Golden Age of Piracy in the 1730s. The period during which pirates were most successful was from the 1640s until the 1680s. Caribbean piracy arose out of, and mirrored on a smaller scale, the conflicts over trade and colonization among the rival European powers of the time, including England, Spain, Dutch United Provinces, and France. Two of the best-known pirate bases were Tortuga in the 1640s and Port Royal after 1655. One of the last famous pirates of the Caribbean was Cofresí: Roberto Cofresí Ramirez de Arellano (1791-1825). He was put to death for his crimes in Puerto Rico at the Castle of San Felipe del Morro. His romantic legend inspires plays and songs on the island.

Piracy was common in this area because the surrounding coastline had many isolated beaches where pirates could land.

yes there was pirates

McSchpadin @ 6:24 pm

there were a lot of pirates there at one time. most of them were actually privateers which went their country gave them permission to raid the ships and ports of the enemy.

the early settlement of the Caribbean was mainly done by the English and Spanish. it was easier for the country's to let their privateers hurt the enemy economically then it was to raise an army.

for the English Port Royal Jamaica was the main pirate port for along time. i don't know the names of the others but over time they changed due to political circumstances.

The Caribbean was crawling with them, here's one of their main gathering places, it was mentioned in the movie, the place was so rotten God gave them a nice present in the form of an earthquake and darn nearly made another Atlantis of the place!

Famous pirates I've read about from the Caribbean area: Calico Jack Rackham, who sailed with Anne Bonny (a rarity-female pirate)

Bartholomew Roberts, a.k.a. Black Bart, who is famous for hanging a colonial governonr from the yardarm of his own ship in revenge for a friend's death.

Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard, who used to go into battles wearing burning slow-match sticking out from under his hat to give him a more fearsome appearance.

Oh, yah. One of my ancestors took a ship near Barbados. Not that I have anything to show for it. Blast his lights and liver!
Yah, there were pirates in the Caribbean - 1580s-1720s mostly (after which it became too civilized and the pirates moved on to the Indian Ocean, where they thrive today.
Most of the Caribbean pirates had short, unhappy careers. One of the exceptions was Henry Morgan, who (while a lousy sailor) was a brilliant leader of men. Another was Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts, who took over 200 ships and then was supposedly slain off Africa, though neither his body nor his treasure was ever recovered.
Hmmmmm.

I'm sure there were pirates that traveled all over the oceans and went into ports and the like in the Caribbean.
