Is a passport needed to go on a Caribbean cruise?

Can you answer Sweetie's question about Caribbean Vacations?:

I am planning on a cruise to the Caribbean with the rest of my family over Christmas vacation, and I was wondering whether or not I will need a passport. We would be leaving from Fort Lauderdale, FL and cruising the Caribbean for 5 days, and returning to FL.

Have you claimed your Genesis site?

The government originally planned to require anyone cruising to have a passport starting January 2008. This may get pushed back again. Still, its a good idea to get them before you need them as people are now waiting up to 15 weeks before getting the passport.

Technically, passports will not be required for SEA travel to the Caribbean until Jan. 2008, however, some cruise lines require passengers to have passports. Best thing to do is CALL your cruise line and ASK them to be sure. See website below if you do need passports.

It actually depends where you are cruising. They gov't is asking for everyone that travels to the caribbean in 2008 to have a passport, EXCEPT going to Puerto Rico, Guam or the USVI (st thomas, etc.) because they are US territories. So if you are only going to these US territories then you do not need one. If you are going anywhere else than you do need one. If you send away for a passport it will take atleast a few months. If you can't wait that long go down to the office & wait in line(for about 5 hours more or less) & you will leave with one.
