You Betta Belize It!

by Rebecca Odenkirk

Plan to stay on Ambergris Caye as long as you possibly can. It still will not be long enough! The tropical breezes and warm, sunny beaches will wash all your cares away. There is so much to do. You can wind surf, parasail, and kayak. Ambergris also offers great scuba diving and snorkeling. Watch the sun rise, eat breakfast, and then explore the shopping in San Pedro. You can also take day trips to the mainland to see the Mayan ruins. Or maybe you'd like zip lining in the jungle.

Bring lots of strong sun block, bug repellant for jungle visits, shorts and tee shirts, swimsuits, sandals, and souvenir money. Ambergris is a laid back and casual island. Don't bother bringing dressy clothes or curling irons. You wont use them. Pack only play clothes and comfortable walking shoes. There are many beach vendors selling fresh fruit, bead jewelry, weaving, and woodcarving. You can shop in San Pedro for local art of all kinds.

You can eat as cheaply or as expensively as you want, on Ambergris Caye. Most resorts and hotels have a dining room and/or bar on the water. George's has good food and is convenient. Rico's is a little longer walk along the beach, and is quite expensive, but the service and the food are great. For authentic local food, eat at the Reef, downtown.

Transportation on Ambergris is mostly golf carts and bicycles. You can also take a taxi. Walking will take you to most places. If you rent a golf cart, be aware that there are no lines on the roads, but there are parking restrictions in downtown San Pedro.

Nature lovers will find much to see on Ambergris. Caribbean Villas Hotel has a "people perch" to view the birds and tree tops from. Bring your camera. Back on the ground you will find geckos and chameleons darting around. Sit on any beach and watch frigate birds, osprey, eagles, and gulls. If you are lucky you will see dolphin swim by.

Whether you are looking to relax, or find adventure, you will find it in Belize, C. A. on Ambergris Caye. You betta Belize it!
